Art in the Park - June 20 - 22, 2011 - 10:00AM–Noon

Each year, the City of Sidney offers summer clinics for children in the parks. The Gateway Arts Council takes place by sponsoring an arts-related clinic. In 2010, participants worked with wool to create felt geodes. Kids wrapped layers of wool into a spherical form and dunked it into warm, soapy water, gently rubbing and squeezing the fibers to create a felt ball. Once the felt balls dried, they were given the option to cut them open to reveal their geode! Additionally, each kid created a weaving of paper, string, ribbon, yarn and other goodies, and also created abstract watercolor pieces with the help of plastic wrap. Art in the Park is always hands-on. Kids get to be agents in their own learning. The recommended ages for Art in the Park are 7-12, though older and younger are welcome as well. We advise the kids to dress in layers as the weather can be quite unpredictable at the beginning of June! Registration for the clinic will take place starting in May.

Price: Free - Registration is required!

Gateway Youth

Gateway Arts Council is proud partner with many organizations throughout Shelby County including Amos Memorial Public Library, YMCA of Sidney & Shelby County, Sidney Dance Company, Sidney Civic Band, Swing Era Band, Sock & Buskin Community Theatre Group, Shelby County Soil & Water Conservation District, City of Sidney's Parks & Recreation Department, all public and parochial schools in Shelby County, among many others. One of our most treasured partnerships is with Gateway Youth services. In working with Gateway Youth Services, we provide arts education to youth who are determined to be at-risk. Our goal is for the children to learn to effectively express themselves through drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, dance, movement and role play. We strive to work with Gateway Youth Services twice monthly, introducing these children to a variety of dance, percussion and theatre experiences, as well as visual arts techniques and mediums.

Studies show students who participate in the arts improve their academic achievement as well as their success in other realms of life and learning. Studies also indicate taht students with high arts involvement perform better on standardized achievement tests than those with low arts involvement. Engagement in the arts cultivates imagination and allows young people to have positive outlets for their energy. By providing access the the arts for these "at-risk" youth, we hope to help them be better prepared to assume their roles as active, productive and creative citizens in their community.

Music Matters Instrument Program

The Music Matters Instrument Program is one in which the Arts Council buys & rents musical instruments and provides them to children who want to participate in their school band or orchestra but are without the resources to own their own instument. The Music Matters Instrument Program will provide the children with instruments at a rental fee of $10 per school year so that they may study and perform music. We ask that each child apply and have a letter of recommendation from someone within the community. The student must maintain a "C" average in all of their academic classes to remain eligible for this program. If your child is in need of a musical instrument so that they may participate in their school band or orchestra, please have them ask their music teacher about Gateway Arts Council's Music Matters Instrument Program. We believe that every child should have access to instruments and music education! This project was originally created as a partnership of the Arts Council, Shelby County Family & Children First Council, United Way, and the Shelby County YMCA, and is now run soley by Gateway Arts Council.

We accept musical instrument donations! Please call 937-498-2787 to get in touch with us about donating your used instrument. Please remember that we are in need of instruments that can be used in band and orchestra programs.

Price: $10 per year

Sidney Dance Company - 4th Grade Performance

Gateway Arts Council partners with Sidney Dance Company each year to give 4th graders, countywide, the privilege of seeing a live dance performance. The Arts Council pays Sidney Dance Company for a special, school-day performance and arranges for all Sidney and Shelby County 4th graders to attend, free of charge, as a school field trip. The Dance Company's student performers give many children their first chance to see dance performed. In addition, the audience is invited to ask questions of the dancers following the performance. In some cases, the younger performers are peers of the students viewing the performance.
